ArtAssure is pleased to announce MOSS: Dialogues Between Art & Design

AUCTION: OCTOBER 16, 2012 | VIEWING: OCTOBER 6-15, 2012 | HOURS: 10AM – 6PM | AUCTION AND VIEWING LOCATION: Phillips de Pury & Company, 450 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10022

New York – Phillips de Pury & Company is pleased to announce MOSS, an auction of art and design including works from the personal collection of Murray Moss and Franklin Getchell, founders of Moss, a beloved New York design institution. The auction, prefaced by a ten-day exhibition, will juxtapose contemporary and historical design with paintings, sculpture and photography. The assemblage was done in collaboration with ArtAssure Ltd.

In 1994 former fashion entrepreneur Murray Moss opened Moss, a small gallery in SoHo. Murray aimed to transform public perception through a careful selection and presentation of industrial design. The store quickly gained an international reputation for its product range which later expanded to include furniture, limited edition works, lighting, jewelry, and tableware. Clients ranged from design professionals to international collectors, students, and tourists with maps.

For eighteen years, through his celebrated installations and exhibitions, Murray Moss expanded the traditional definition of design by repeatedly illuminating what he referred to as “the Narrative” found in certain exceptional objects. By juxtaposing two or more disparate works, Murray aimed to create a ‘tertium quid’ (third thing) that makes the whole greater than the sum of its individual parts.

Moss Bureau, Moss and Getchell’s latest endeavor, continues the work of designer representation and exhibition, plus focused and curated design retail, and also offers design consulting and advisory, as well as curatorial, services, teaching and public speaking.

In October Murray will curate his own auction at Phillips de Pury & Company New York. The exhibition and auction will include important works by prominent contemporary designers including Maarten BaasHella JongeriusStudio Job,Marcel WandersFernando and Humberto CampanaTokujin YoshiokaEnzo Mari, and Alberto Meda, as well as master works by mid-century design master Gio Ponti and sculptor Leo Amino. Design icons will be paired in vignettes with sculpture and paintings by Frank StellaLouise NevelsonAlberto GiacomettiGeorge Rickey,George Condo, and Candida Hofer, amongst others. View the auction catalogue now.

“Phillips de Pury has given me a unique opportunity to take my ideas to another level – to break down barriers between art and design and to create dialogue between the various disciplines. After all, we live with juxtapositions of art and design in our homes, created intentionally or not, with little guidance given us as to how to approach the subject – the art – of montage. Traditionally cultural institutions and galleries and, indeed, auction houses, for the most part segregate art and design, departmentally and physically, eliminating the possibility of ‘tertium quid’ and this is our opportunity to create that experience.” Murray Moss, Partner, Moss.

“Moss, the auction, proposes a new paradigm and Phillips has provided an incredible venue to demonstrate the benefits. Being a design gallery, we never had the possibility at Moss to pair paintings and sculpture, couture and photography, with functional objects. Through this partnership we are afforded the incredible luxury of subjectively placing art in dialogue with design, and thereby compose nearly 100 visual and intellectual ‘fugues’.” Franklin Getchell, Partner, Moss.

“I am absolutely thrilled that Phillips de Pury is staging this very exciting sale! What Murray Moss and Franklin Getchell have done with their pioneering space in Soho has been invigorating and truly inspiring. We share their spirit and I can’t wait to work with them.” Simon de Pury, Chairman, Phillips de Pury & Company.
